Frequently Asked Questions
Your Residential Locksmith Questions, Answered.
What is a locksmith scam or locksmith scammer?
This is an important topic, which is why it’s in the FAQs of most of the services pages (not all, but most). It’s so important we recently wrote a blog post on it, that we recommend you read. In short, a locksmith scammer is an operation that advertises absurdly low prices (i.e. $19 for a lockout) and then once on-site after the work is complete, will charge hundreds more claiming that $19 was just to show up. It’s the classic bait and switch. They are adept at getting their websites to show in top searches so unknowing consumers click on the first results available and will often destroy the customer’s door hardware to increase the service charge by selling another doorknob or deadbolt.
Does New Hampshire require locksmith licensing?
According to ALOA, as of January 2025, 13 states require locksmith licensing: Alabama, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas and Virginia. New Hampshire is not a state that requires locksmiths to be licensed so you should ask questions to avoid scammers. LockWorks is fully insured and a member of both ALOA and SAVTA.
Why should I rekey my locks after moving into a new home?
When you move into a new home, you can’t be sure who else might have a copy of the key. Rekeying your locks ensures that all previous keys from the former owners or tenants are obsolete, giving you a fresh start and immediate peace of mind.
Is it possible for a locksmith to make a new key if I don’t have the original?
Yes, a professional locksmith can create a new key even if you’ve lost the original. We can do this by using specialized tools to take an impression of the existing lock or by disassembling the lock to determine the correct pin sizes.
What are the benefits of installing a smart lock?
Smart locks offer advanced convenience and security. They allow for keyless entry using a code or your smartphone, eliminating the need for physical keys. You can also grant temporary access to visitors and monitor who is entering and exiting your home remotely from your phone, giving you total control and peace of mind from anywhere.
How much does it cost to hire a locksmith?
The short answer is, it depends. On the market, the business’s overhead, profit goals, etc. While there is no standard of pricing that all locksmith businesses follow, LockWorks charges a trip charge (aka service charge) for each visit to a customer’s property. This covers the cost to run the vehicle, vehicle insurance, wear & tear, fuel etc. After which the job is either priced flat rate (for simple scenarios like lock rekeys or deadbolt installations) or priced time and materials (T&M) for more complex scenarios with unknown variables (such as installation of a Ring camera system with configuration, testing, and modifications required). In either case, upon request we will always provide a quote for services ahead of time.
What does it mean to rekey a lock?
Rekeying a lock is the process of altering its internal mechanism so that it works with a new key. The old key will no longer operate the lock. This is a cost-effective alternative to replacing the entire lock, especially if the lock is in good condition.
Can a single key be used for all my home’s locks?
Yes, in many cases, we can rekey multiple locks in your home so that they all work with a single key. This is a popular and convenient solution for homeowners, eliminating the need to carry a bulky keychain with separate keys for the front door, back door, and garage.
What’s the difference between a regular lock and a deadbolt?
A regular lock, like a spring-bolt knob lock, uses a spring mechanism that can be vulnerable to forced entry. A deadbolt, however, uses a solid metal bolt that extends deep into the door frame without a spring, making it far more resistant to physical attacks and providing a powerful visual deterrent to burglars.
How is a professional locksmith better than a hardware store for rekeying?
While some hardware stores offer rekeying, a professional locksmith provides on-site, personalized service with a wider range of expertise. We can handle more complex locks, and our professional services come with the assurance of a warranty and reliability. We can also provide tailored security advice for your specific situation, which is something you won’t get at a hardware store.
